Teenage History, Popular Media and the 'Scrapbook Self'
Teenage History, Popular Media and the 'Scrapbook Self'
Associate Professor Chris Brickell, Gender Studies, University of Otago
What role did media play in the development of New Zealand's youth culture? This presentation draws from my forthcoming book Teenagers: The Rise of New Zealand Youth Culture, and focuses on the decades between 1880 and 1950: a time before the 'teenager' officially came into being.
It examines media as a cultural resource which young people have picked up, interacted with, and actively negotiated as they forged their own relationships, styles and identities. How were media texts important in the shaping of adolescent selfhood in New Zealand's past?
