Inaugural Professorial Lecture - Professor Tim Eglinton

Surgery in Evolution: Technology, Trials and Training

About Professor Tim Eglinton

Tim is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in Christchurch and Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Otago Christchurch.

About Tim’s research

Tim's research has focused on the epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis and minimally invasive surgical techniques for general surgical conditions, including the application of artificial intelligence to these techniques.

Tim is passionate about advancing surgical training. He served for over a decade on the RACS Surgical Skills Education and Training Committee and is Deputy Chair of the ANZ Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Rapid advances in technology and innovation mean that change is the only true constant in surgery. This lecture addresses the integration of technology into surgical practice and training, focusing on UOC's significant contributions to this. It highlights specific challenges to surgical innovation but also its exciting possibilities, on the eve of a robotic and artificial intelligence-driven surgical era.

This lecture will be followed with light refreshments, tea, coffee and juice.
