The TRN Steering Group are pleased to confirm the next TRN Seminar will take place on Thursday, 16 March 2023.

The seminar is “Weather or not to go: The travel impact of nuisance flooding and heavy rain for disabled and older people” and will be presented by Emily Ward from the University of Canterbury.

Emily is a master’s student who was awarded a Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency summer scholarship to better understand the impact surface water can have on the disabled and the elderly’s ability to travel. In this presentation Emily will share her findings from her summer scholarship research.

Emily's project goals were to better understand the impact surface water can have on the disabled and the elderly’s ability to travel by finding out the everyday challenges people face after heavy rains and resulting surface water.

Emily hopes that her research will help inform councils and government to make cities more equitable and identify how active transport modes can be more resilient to poor weather. She also hopes to highlight transport barriers for people with physical impairments, especially in the context of an aging population.
