Dignity and Mana as Principles in New Zealand Law

The University of Otago Development and Alumni Relations Team are excited to offer you the opportunity to hear from some our academic researchers in our online series: March with Otago.

Presented by Associate Professor Anna High and Mihiata Pirini

The concept of dignity is increasingly recognized in Aotearoa NZ case law and legislation as an important value. In some cases, it is associated with the Māori concept of mana, but without consideration of the important cultural and conceptual differences between the two. In this seminar, we consider the use of ‘dignity’ in NZ law, and explore the potential for a new, richer, ‘third-law’ concept of dignity to develop.
