Faith Thinking – Obeying God's Plan? The Spiritual Abuse of Nuns

Obeying God's Plan? The Spiritual Abuse of Nuns Rocío Figueroa and David Tombs present findings from Rocío's interviews with six former nuns of the Servants of God's Plan (SPD) community in Peru, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador.

We examine examples of how the community's emphasis on obedience to God was distorted into demands for absolute and unquestioning obedience to leaders within the community, and how this became an instrument of coercive control. We suggest the work on spiritual abuse by Lisa Oakley and her colleagues is helpful for understanding these negative dynamics and the harm they cause.

Dr Rocío Figueroa (Te Kupenga - Catholic Theological College) and Professor David Tombs (Centre for Theology and Public Issues).
