The Department of History and Art History at the University of Otago is proud to present this public lecture by Professor Sir Richard J. Evans, Regius Professor Emeritus of History, University of Cambridge.
As the principal expert witness in the libel suit brought by David Irving against the American academic Deborah Lipstadt in London in 2000, Professor Evans—one of the world authorities on Nazi Germany—is in a unique position to reflect on the depiction of the trial in the movie Denial, released in New Zealand earlier this year. The trial addressed important issues such as truth and falsehood, freedom of speech, and history and memory. In this lecture Professor Evans provides unique insights into how they were dealt with in the film.
