The global effort to tackle obesity and diabetes

Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research and the Healthier Lives National Science Challenge will co-host a public lecture by two international obesity and diabetes researchers on Friday 23 February, 2018.

The Minister of Health, Hon Dr David Clark will deliver an opening address, followed by presentations from Professor Jeff Reading (Canada) and Professor Nick Wareham (UK).   The talks will include research on gene-environment interactions, social determinants of obesity, strategies for prevention of diabetes, and life-course approaches within indigenous communities.

Meet our speakers

Professor Jeff Reading

Jeff Pic 186Jeff Reading is the inaugural British Columbia First Nations Health Authority Heart Health and Wellness Chair at St. Paul’s Hospital, and leads the Indigenous, Health, Education, Access, Research and Training Centre (I-HEART) to help promote solutions to improve health and well-being.

Professor Reading has served as inaugural Scientific Director of the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2000-2008) and currently chairs the Indigenous peer review committee cluster. His broad interests include all aspects of First Nations health and well-being and community engaged research.

Professor Nick Wareham

Nick Wareham 186Nick Wareham is Director of the MRC Epidemiology Unit and co-Director of the Institute of Metabolic Science at the University of Cambridge in which he leads a programme on the aetiology of diabetes and related metabolic disorders.

Professor Wareham is also Director of the UKCRC Centre of Public Health Research Excellence in Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) and the lead for the Cambridge BRC theme in Diet, Nutrition and Lifestyle. He is an Honorary Consultant with Addenbrooke’s and Public Health England.
