“The devil tempts the ears with harmonious music” (Cyprian) – On music in the writings of the early Church fathers

A public lecture by Dr Jutta Guenther
School of Languages and Cultures
Victoria University of Wellington

Early Christianity developed inside and often in response to pagan society. In this lecture, I will explore the ways the fathers of the Christian church reacted to the music in their communities and the moral judgements they made on it.

All welcome.
