Department of Medicine Seminar Series

Telemedicine

Professor Michael Schultz, MD, PhD

Through advances in information technology high-speed internet access is almost ubiquitous; most people own smartphones and health applications (apps) are widespread. As a consequence, health care consumers are starting to expect – and even demand – health care that is just as convenient and user friendly as the other services they use, such as banking, entertainment, and commerce. Healthcare professionals need to adapt to this growing trend: “Our patients spend most of their lives far away from an examination room. To capture their attention and engage them in their care, we must reach beyond the clinic, hospital, or endoscopy suite… we have to reach out to where our patients live, work, and play.” I will outline current trends in eHealth, discuss our recently published study using a smartphone app to monitor patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and outline ongoing projects.
