Ancient Forests: New insights into New Zealand's fossil wood flora

PhD candidate Mathew Vanner will speak about his research.

Fossil wood is an important source of information relating to the Ancient Forests of New Zealand. Data from fossil wood can be combined with that from leaves, pollen, flowers and fruits to provide a better understanding of the floral communities living in New Zealand in the past. It is also a good source of paleoecological and paleoclimatic information.

This talk is an overview of the research conducted in the first year of PhD research; it includes data from 40 new samples of fossil wood from 14 new sites covering an age range from the Jurassic to the Miocene.
