Stepping up: School leadership preparation in uncertain times

Dr Sylvia Robertson

This presentation explores the Teaching Council (2018) leadership strategy for school leadership in Aotearoa New Zealand. Funded by a University of Otago Research Grant, the author is researching perceptions and experiences of school leadership preparation.

The aim is to increase understanding of what is required in terms of leadership programmes and strategies in order to best prepare principals to lead high-needs schools. Some background to current trends in leadership preparation in New Zealand is provided, together with school leaders’ reflections on personal experience of leadership preparation. Preliminary findings, with reference to experience of school leadership during the COVID pandemic, are shared. Some implications for leadership preparation are identified, and the future direction of the study outlined.
