Sönke Stern (University of Auckland) will be presenting their PhD research on the Kuwae submarine caldera, Vanatau While we know that a catastrophic, explosive eruption occurred at the submarine caldera of Kuwae, Vanuatu, in the 15th century, the magnitude, style and implications of that eruption remain unclear.
Historical, archaeological and geological records show that at least a regionally devastating event happened at Kuwae, but at the same time paleoclimatic datasets show that a global climate-affecting eruption occurred somewhere in the low southern latitudes.
Further work is needed to establish - or rule out - Kuwae as a source for the catastrophic event, for which I present the current state of research.
