The University of Otago is proud to announce it has retained its 5-star rating in the latest release of QS Intelligence Unit's world university performance statistics.

Otago gained the maximum 5-star rating in all of the eight categories; teaching, employability, research, internationalisation, facilities, innovation, inclusiveness, and life sciences & medicine. Overall, Otago reached the maximum possible rating of 5 Stars Plus.

The QS Stars rating system is operated by the QS Intelligence Unit, an independent compiler of the QS World University Rankings since 2004. The system evaluates universities across a wide range of important performance indicators as set against pre-established international standards.

Otago is one of five Universities across Australia and New Zealand to hold the 5 Stars Plus rating.

University of Otago Director of Planning and Funding, David Thomson, says the rating further confirms Otago's world renowned reputation.

“Achieving this distinction is no easy accomplishment and comes through the hard work of everybody at the University of Otago. Tertiary education is a dynamic industry and it is heartening to see Otago continues to be rated amongst the world's best,” Mr Thomson says.

The certification provides Otago with benefits such as increased recognition, brand association with the QS Stars network, and increased marketing and media opportunities.

“It is satisfying to know Otago will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2019 as a 5 Stars Plus rated institution. As we mark one hundred and fifty years of achievement we can move into the next 150 years immensely proud of our performance in the past, as well as the present,” Mr Thomson adds.

The QS stars system is an opt-in certification service operated as an adjunct to the QS world university rankings. In those rankings Otago ranks 175th out of a total of over 20,000 thousand universities worldwide.
