Overview

Otago Medical School has four specialised scholarships available for PhD or masters' students based in our academic departments.

Frances G Cotter Scholarship for Research in Medicine

Eligibility

Open to medical graduates who are registered as medical practitioners with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Duration

This scholarship is available for one year.

Details

Tenable at the University of Otago for the purpose of undertaking research in the Department of Medicine, Otago Medical School, or as part of a collaborative project involving another University department, with the active participation of a member of the senior staff of the Department of Medicine in Dunedin.

Emolument

A tax-free emolument is available (dependent on qualifications).

Dunbar Scholarship

Eligibility

Open to all graduates of the University of Otago, although the scholarship would be particularly suited to a graduate of the Division of Health Sciences.

Duration

This scholarship is available for one year.

Details

Tenable at Otago Medical School, the Dunbar Scholarship is available to undertake research relating to:

  • Urinary disorders, or
  • Uterine disorders, or
  • Catarrhal disorders, or
  • Another field of research as may be approved by the University

Emolument

A tax-free emolument is available (dependent on qualifications).

Emily Johnston Scholarship for Research in the Science and Art of Clinical Medicine

Eligibility

Open to all graduates of any university in New Zealand who:

  • Are Commonwealth subjects, and
  • Hold a degree in medicine, and
  • Have completed at least 10 months' residence as house surgeon or house physician in a New Zealand hospital with at least 100 beds

Duration

This scholarship is available for one year.

Details

This scholarship is tenable in the Department of Medicine (Otago Medical School), for research in the science and art of clinical medicine.

Emolument

A tax-free emolument is available (dependent on qualifications).

Lady King Scholarship

Eligibility

Open to graduates in medicine of the University of Otago, or of other universities approved by Council.

Duration

This scholarship is available for one year.

Details

This scholarship is tenable at Otago Medical School, and is available for the purpose of encouraging the study in New Zealand of:

  • Preventable work in paediatrics, and/or
  • The wellbeing of mother and child in the antenatal, intra-natal, and postnatal periods, and/or
  • The wellbeing of children up to school age

Emolument

A tax-free emolument is available (dependent on qualifications).
