Research in our lab is carried out as part of the Sir John Walsh Research Institute. Our staff and students are part of the Oral Molecular and Immunopathology Research Group with a focus on molecular pathogenesis of oral diseases, with a particular emphasis on oral cancer and immune-mediated diseases.

Research techniques

At the Oral Pathology Centre we have diagnostic level research equipment available for research use. All our equipmentare thoroughly maintained as per IANZ standardsand operated by registered medical laboratory scientists.

  • Histology: Sample preparation, processing, embedding and blocking. Preparation of sections and routine / special staining.
  • Frozen sections and cryostat
  • Immunohistochemistry: Automated IHC immunostainer (Leica BOND-III). Diagnostic and research antibodies
  • Immunofluorescence: Diagnostic quality Olympus LED immunofluorescence microscope.
  • Digital whole slide scanning: Leica Aperio CS2and Olympus DP23. Whole slide scanning, diagnostic quality photomicrography
