Fiona McDonald, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at the University’s Faculty of Dentistry, braved a sub-zero Dunedin winter’s morning to take the photo which has become this year’s July digital calendar.

On an icy July morning in 2016, Fiona McDonald spotted an unusual perspective on a familiar scene during her walk to the Farmer’s Market – looking through frosty grass at a Harbour Terrace flat.

She took one shot, then promptly put her gloves back onto her numb hands.

The cold hands were worth it. With that single photo, she made top 12 in the 2017 Bulletin Board photo competition – and earned a spot in this year’s Bulletin Board digital calendar. There was only one month the photo could represent: July.

The Otago Bulletin Board digital calendar, released each month, features the 12 winning and notable entries from the previous year’s photo competition.

Ms McDonald, who is the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at the University’s Faculty of Dentistry, says she has been taking photographs for about five years, and is always trying to increase her knowledge and improve her skills.

“I had been reading about low angle photography earlier that week, and I was looking out for a way to use it to show a view that was familiar to me from an entirely different perspective. The view at ground level through the frozen grass down the street was just what I’d been looking for.”
