A silent march will begin near the Staff Club on Thursday and head to Forsyth Barr Stadium to join a civic vigil.

Following the tragic mosque shootings in Christchurch last Friday, several events are being held on the Dunedin campus this Thursday 21 March.

The University is planning a silent march from the centre of campus to Forsyth Barr Stadium for all Dunedin staff and students who are attending the 7pm Civic Vigil on Thursday evening.

Led by the University’s residential colleges, the march will begin from Memorial Bridge and walk down Union Street. All students, staff and their families are invited to participate in a silent display of solidarity and support.

Attendees are invited to begin gathering from 5:30pm, ready to begin walking at 5:45pm. This map indicates where to line up at the March start.

There is a designated space for the University at the stadium and there will be bag searches upon arrival. This may take some time, which means entry to the stadium may be slow.

Bottles of water are permitted, and there will be an opportunity to donate gold coins. The donations will be distributed locally for immediate financial needs such as travel to Christchurch to support victims and families, mosque maintenance or additional support service.

Public Lecture: Chief Human Rights Commissioner – 11am

Earlier in the day, at 11am in Union Hall, the Chief Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt will give a public lecture, entitled the Courage of Our Convictions.

The lecture was planned some weeks ago, to coincide with International Race Relations Day, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and the launch of the University’s Give Nothing to Racism campaign.

The University joined the Human Rights Commission’s campaign this year as it aligned with its values, and the lecture and campaign have taken on new significance as a result of Friday’s mosque attacks.

OUSA vigil – 1pm

Also on Thursday, at 1pm, the Otago University Students’ Association (OUSA) will hold a vigil on campus in collaboration with the Otago Muslim Students' Association.

The OUSA vigil will take place in the centre of campus by the Memorial Bridge, and all staff and students are welcome to participate.
