Geology Lecturer Dr Marco Brenna took the photo which is our April 2020 digital calendar on Otago's Rock and Pillar Ranges.
This month’s Otago Bulletin Board digital calendar is particularly poignant – with the COVID-19 level 4 lockdown currently keeping us all in our own homes.
The wide-open spaces of Geology Lecturer Marco Brenna’s photo, taken near Big Hut on the Rock and Pillar Ranges, are both beautiful and tantalising.
“A colleague and I made the ascent one afternoon and had great views of the auroras at night,” he says. “We left the hut at the break of dawn, and this view opened up with the warm sunlight firing up the tussock in the foreground, contrasting with the misty Middlemarch Plain down below.”
The photo was captivating last year during our photo competition judging – making the top 12 – and is even more so now.
Dr Brenna has regularly had success in the Otago Bulletin Board contest.
“I've been an amateur photographer since early on, and I am intrigued by unusual combinations of light, colours and shapes, particularly in the natural world.”
