“Celebrating 150 years is not just about looking back: we are a progressive
University with clear strategic goals and a bold vision. In reflecting on the many
outstanding achievements of the past 150 years we must use this knowledge
and experience to inform our future.” – Professor Harlene Hayne
The Vice-Chancellor articulates that the University of Otago's sesquicentennial celebration
in 2019, will be of the old 150 years (past), and the new (future). In the Pacific world, the
coconut is identifiable as a proud symbol for the Pacific region, and the word coconut can be
translated in the majority of Pacific languages as Niu.
The play of the word Niu to phonetically match the English word new, states that the vision
of the Pacific celebrations for University of Otago's 150th anniversary, is to celebrate the
University's Pacific connections in its past, present, and future.
