This paper aims to provide a learning framework that will allow students to integrate their knowledge and clinical skills so as to be competent in the delivery of dentistry to individuals and the community.
By the end of the paper students are expected to:
- Demonstrate the ability to appropriately establish rapport with patients to understand their values and expectations towards oral health
- Understand the relationship between oral health and general health in the delivery of oral healthcare
- Understand current scientific dental related knowledge and the current biological, physical, cultural, social and psychological factors involved in dental and oral disease and the attainment and maintenance of health
- Obtain by interview and examination patient information relevant to the delivery of oral health care
- Record patient information logically, legibly and securely using both paper records and electronic patient management systems
- Analyse patient information and plan a prioritized, individualized oral health care programme
- Provide or make provision for patient-centered oral health care: demonstrate the ability to assess the effectiveness of population oral health strategies
- Communicate effectively and professionally: communicate with and/or educate the dental team, patients, caregivers/other health workers, and the public on oral health matters
- Maintain competence by self-monitoring (reflecting) on the outcomes of delivery of oral health care and undertaking continuing personal professional development/life-long learning, understanding of the legal requirements and practice standards in an oral health workplace and understanding of the ethical responsibilities and legislation concerning the safe practice of dentistry in NZ
At the end of the course, students will have the attributes of a BDS graduate / BDS Honours graduate and will have demonstrated competency in meeting the professional standards and practice standards and abiding by the ethical principles described in the DC(NZ) Standards Framework of Oral Health Practitioners (2015).
