    Overview

    A synthesis and examination of factors influencing the operation of accommodation sector organisations and businesses. An application of the knowledge and skills from prior learning in the area of tourism and hospitality human resources management, yield management, and the environmental and managerial conditions specific to the accommodation sector.

    The hospitality industry combines the growth of the tourism industry, alongside changing patterns of leisure consumption, in creating one of New Zealand’s fastest growing business areas. Accommodation is a specific sector of this industry and is about much more than a bed for the night. This paper will cover human resources management, yield management, and the environmental and managerial conditions specific to the accommodation sector.

    Paper Structure

    This paper covers:

    • An overarching appreciation of the global accommodation sector
    • A more practical understanding of the nature of the commercial accommodation sector

    There will also be a field trip to an accommodation provider (subject to the availability of the provider).

    One 2-hour lecture and a fortnightly tutorial.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who successfully complete the paper will:

    • Have an understanding of the role of commercial accommodation within the tourism context
    • Have knowledge about the financial, environmental, managerial and human resource considerations of tourist accommodation
    • Understand the wider social and cultural contexts in which the accommodation sector occurs
    • Understand and critique trends within the accommodation sector in light of current debates on issues such as sustainability and CSR (corporate social responsibility)
