    Overview

Tuition to develop ‘solo’ or ‘ensemble’ performance skills.

This 18-point paper caters for students wishing to develop their performance skills. It can be taken in one of the following ways:

    • As a preliminary performance paper that can either lead into a higher-level 18-point MUSI paper (i.e. MUSI 240) or a 36-point MUSI paper (i.e. MUSI 141)
    • As a paper for the one-semester exchange student
    • As a second-instrument study for existing performance students
    • As a vocal ensemble option
    • As a jazz ensemble option
    • As a paper in an approved World Music Option

Therefore, there are four main areas:

    • Solo Instrumental: Admission to the Performance Studies paper in a solo instrument is by audition. The paper provides tuition to develop the candidate's potential in a semester or whole-year course.
    • Vocal Ensemble: Admission is by audition. Students enrolled will be organised into a small vocal ensemble through which they will acquire the skills associated with performing in and directing a small vocal ensemble. This option is ideal for students with prior experience performing in a choral or solo setting. Enrolment will be capped at 12 people. All students enrolled must audition before mid-October of the previous year.
    • Jazz Ensemble: Admission is by audition. Students enrolled will be organised into a small groups through which they will acquire the skills associated with performing in a jazz ensemble. This option is for Semester 2 only. It is ideal for students with prior experience performing on guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums, saxophone or contemporary voice. Enrolment will be capped at 20 people.
    • World Music Option: Students will learn to play traditional and contemporary music in an approved World Music Option: Taonga Pūoro (traditional Māori instruments), Taiko (Japanese drumming), Koto (Japanese zither) or Scottish piping or drumming). The World Music option is ideal for students with no prior knowledge of these styles of music.

After completing enrolment, Performance Students should email the Office to advise which musical instrument/s they have chosen to study in 2023.
