In 2006, Professor Steve Duffull established the Otago Pharmacometrics Group at the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago in Dunedin (New Zealand).

Pharmacometrics is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of pharmacological data. The aim is to enhance the quantitative understanding of how drug treatments impact human biology and to improve outcomes for patients.

Our group conducts research in three broad areas;

  • Systems pharmacology and model simplification,
  • Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modelling,
  • Clinical pharmacology and dose individualisation.

We have a state of the art multi core computer system and use leading edge software, including NONMEM, MONOLIX, Stan, MATLAB, popt and popt_i, CellML and R.

Our areas of research expertise include: frequentist and Bayesian modelling, optimal design, structural identifiability analysis, and scale reduction methodologies.

Our group is part of the Clinical Pharmacy discipline at the School of Pharmacy, and is also linked with the Arthritis Research Theme and the Kidney in Health and Disease Research Theme at the University of Otago. In addition, we have strong collaborations with other research groups working on modelling & simulation, clinical pharmacology and toxicology in New Zealand, Australia and overseas.

If you are interested in working with us as a student or a collaborator please contact pharmacometrics@otago.ac.nz for general enquiries.
