Director of Undergraduate Programme for the School of Pharmacy Dr Arlene McDowell presents student Elizabeth Kennedy with her award at the University of Otago Green Cross Health Pharmacy Awards.

The University of Otago Green Cross Health Pharmacy Awards were held in March, providing an opportunity for the School of Pharmacy to celebrate the innovation and excellence of its students and staff.

25 undergraduate prizes were awarded, with 16 of those being Top Student Awards for each undergraduate Pharmacy paper. Prizes were also awarded to postgraduate students and preceptors, in addition to teaching and research awards.

Amanda Bradley, event organiser and executive assistant to Dr Carlo Marra, Dean of the School Pharmacy, said it was a “fabulous evening, and everyone was thrilled with how it turned out”.

The event was sponsored by Green Cross Health, a leading New Zealand primary care provider.

“Green Cross Health is honoured to sponsor the event and partner with the University of Otago,” said Alison van Wyke, Green Cross Health Executive of Professional Services.

“The opportunity to hear from our future pharmacists and how excited they are to be shaping people-centred care was certainly inspiring.”

Distinguished Alumnus Dr Hartley Atkinson of AFT Pharmaceuticals attended the awards, presenting a speech illustrating how hard work and dedication, as well as the courage to take risks, can help in achieving goals.

Ms Bradley said she wanted to specially thank all those who helped organise the event, saying they did a “fantastic job”.

“Not to mention I still have students raving about how good the food was!”

The event was made possible with the work of Carlo Marra, Dean of the School of Pharmacy; Alison van Wyk, Green Cross Health Sponsor; Emma Prattley, Dunedin Venues event co-ordinator (“and her amazing team of wait staff and security!” adds Ms Bradley); Michael Tomlinson, Executive Chef at Restaurant Associates; Delwyn Jope and her team from Visual Effects; and the technical expertise of Strawberry Sound.
