Ashton Bradley and Xiaoquan Yu from the University of Otago Physics Department and their colleagues from the University of Queensland have published a paper in Science "Giant vortex clusters in a two-dimensional quantum fluid" (Guillaumen Gauthier et al., 2019. Science, doi: 10.1126/science.aat5718).
They investigated theoretically and experimentally two-dimensional turbulence in superfluids, quantum fluids that flow without frictional losses. Dr Bradley said that they observed negative temperature states of quantum vortices, which have never been seen before. He said that the breakthrough may improve understanding of quark-gluon plasmas, electrons in solids, or could help creare more efficient transportation.
Congratulations Ashton and Xiaoquan!
