EMAN 403 Linear Systems and Control Theory -- Additional Information

Paper Description

The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to process simulation and control. We will discuss control theory and application, instrumentation and equipment selection, dynamic simulation and numerical methods for design, operation and control of engineering processes and energy systems.

The course consists of 26 lectures, 4 three-hour labs, and a one-hour tutorial each week to assist with assignments.


The final grade for this course will be composed of 16% from laboratory work, 24% from assignments and 60% from the final exam.

  • Analyse dynamic behaviour of processes using the concept of transfer functions
  • Understand the principles of PID controllers and apply PID controllers to control processes
  • Analyse stabilities of controlled systems
  • Design controllers based on transient response criteria
