Health Sciences Fono

Overview

The Health Sciences Fono is an annual camp for Pacific students, run by the Pacific Island Research & Student Support Unit (PIRSSU) in collaboration with the Pacific Island Health Professional Students’ Association (PIHPSA) and the local Pacific community.

Health professionals are invited to each camp to speak about their experiences, and about what it meant to be a Pacific health worker. Students who have undertaken research also present their work at the Fono, and teach other students about the research pathways that are available to them.

Furthermore, the Fono presents an excellent opportunity to meet and network with fellow students, health professionals, and the wider Pacific community.

Students' comments about the Fono

Over the weekend more than 100 people attended the camp which was given a "thumbs up" by everyone. A big thank you to all who helped out including our camp parents Rev. Ieriko Sopoaga and Tangi Joseph. Our exercise guru, Ala, provided early morning Zumba exercise. Thank you Zumba Master!

The highlight for those with competitive streaks was The Amazing Racewhere 5 teams travelled across the Pacific testing their brains, stomachs, courage, dexterity, and fitness! Later that evening everyone joined in to make fools of themselves and laugh together, while attempting to master the dance moves of X-Box Kinect. After this, all joined in singing around the bonfire toasting marshmallows... yummy... yum.

After only a few hours' sleep, everyone was up again to help prep Sunday lunch... this was part of their cultural training... the making of an Umubaking food the traditional way. Our Pro-Vice-Chancellor attended on Sunday to provide inspiring words for students and to help them on their journey... Dare to be wise, dare to dream, dare to succeed!
