Fliss Butcher

Fliss Butcher,
Graduate,
Master of Entrepreneurship.

Dunedin City Councillor Fliss Butcher is putting her Master of Entrepreneurship to practical use through the development of a golf tourism venture with a difference.

Fliss, who graduated from the 18-month programme in August, has joined forces with local golf professional Shelley Duncan and the pair are soon to launch Play-A-Round Ltd, a service that offers a basic lesson, hire equipment and the ability to play on Dunedin's heritage golf course with other people wanting social activity.

"Traditionally, golfing tourism targets serious golfers, but we did not want to compete in that already over-catered market," Fliss explains.

"My research showed that there is an untapped market of people who would be encouraged to try golf if it was made friendly, fun and easy for them to have a go."

The project began when Fliss offered to focus her MEntr report on an idea for expanding Shelley's golf business, combining this with her dual interests in promoting Dunedin as a recreational sports destination and making the golfing industry more environmentally sustainable.

Fliss says she has met other MEntr graduates who, like her, are pursuing business ideas hatched during their research. She believes this is just one of the ways in which the programme benefits the city which helped to create it through the establishment in 2007 of the Inaugural DCC Chair in Entrepreneurship.
