    This paper focuses on the New Zealand Curriculum and how it applies to teaching and learning in the secondary classroom. In this paper you will be unpacking core aspects of the New Zealand curriculum and working within three or four individual curriculum subjects, which continue throughout the year and into EDUC 577 Secondary Curriculum 2.

    Paper Structure

    New Zealand Curriculum:

    • The nature and purpose of the New Zealand Curriculum
    • Incorporating the New Zealand Curriculum’s principles, vision, key competencies, values and learning areas into planning
    • Progressions of learning within each learning area

    Pedagogy for effective learning:

    • Processes of planning, designing and evaluating pedagogically appropriate approaches to deliver the New Zealand Curriculum
    • Specialist vocabulary and concepts of the subject
    • Critiquing and applying research findings, learning theories and initiatives
    • Differentiated learning
    • Literacy, Numeracy and ICT pedagogy within subjects
    • Resource design, selection, development, use and evaluation

    Diversity and Inclusion:

    • Planning for diversity, inclusion and challenge
    • Culturally responsive, effective pedagogies for a diverse range of learners within subjects
    • Incorporating Te Reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori into planning in a range of ways (e.g., managerial language, specialist curriculum area vocabulary, contexts, ways of working)

    Teaching Arrangements

    EDUC 477 has two components:

    1. Core Sessions:
      All secondary sector students are together in a block at the beginning of semester.
    2. Curriculum Subjects:
      A full programme is 3-4 curriculum subjects across 1-2 Learning Areas. The curriculum staff for each of these subjects will contact students with individual timetable information. These sessions will take place either at the university or a school, and will continue into the second semester.

    Learning Outcomes

    Student teachers who successfully complete this paper will be able to:

    • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum in the secondary school context
    • Apply the New Zealand Curriculum to the diverse learning needs of years 7-13 students in specific learning areas using evidence-based approaches
    • Critically engage with a range of theoretical approaches to teaching and learning
    • Plan effectively, identifying appropriate learning intentions, teaching and learning approaches, resources, and assessment strategies to engage diverse learners at years 7-13
    • Demonstrate the ability to incorporate te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori in their relevant curriculum areas
