Learning Outcomes

The assessment comprises 10-15 short answer response questions (some in English, some in te reo Māori), benchmarked to NZC Level 2 and a set of self-assessment Likert scales. The assessment is designed to be repeated periodically throughout the programme (in preparation for professional experience blocks) so that student teachers’ development and professional practice capabilities may be monitored and planned for. Our approach has been guided by scholarship in second language learning (e.g., Lightbrown & Spada, 2013; Ministry of Education, 2011), such that we designed particular questions and items to reflect that:

  • Exposure to contextually relevant language anchored around meaningful exchanges is supportive of second language learning
  • Assessment information, especially in the form of formative feedback is extremely useful for language learning accuracy and development
  • One’s intrinsic motivations, values, and beliefs can influence language learning success
