Overview
Analyses the language cosplay of Japanese-language speakers based on a set of fine-tuned stereotypes they have about people and their speech styles.
Speakers of the Japanese language hold in their minds a set of fine-tuned stereotypes about people and their speech styles (henceforth role-languages). Manga, anime, story books and TV dramas all make use of role-languages not only to establish characters’ identities but also to send out various sorts of signals that come out of those characters. People in Japan also make use of various role-languages in their daily life to establish their identities in the environment, and convey many things beyond their literal utterances. Japan is indeed a theatrical stage, and JAPA352 teaches students about role-languages, enabling them to act upon the stage of Japan.

Students who successfully complete this paper will demonstrate an understanding of the fine-tuned set of stereotypes that the speakers of the Japanese language have in mind about people and their speech styles. Understanding of this fine-tuned set of stereotypes will in turn enable students to enjoy manga, anime, story books and TV dramas in a fuller way beyond what utterances and images literally convey, and to do language cosplay on the stage of Japan, actively interacting with people in Japan.
