Tutorial-based paper covering contemporary topics in Microbiology and Immunology. Designed to develop skills required for the critical analysis of the scientific literature and for effective oral and written communication.
Fundamental research skills are essential for a career in the field of Microbiology and Immunology. MICR 360 will introduce you to the world of research, teaching you how to analyse work published by other scientists and present scientific research in both written and oral formats. You will be challenged to think critically. You will spend time in research labs and experience what a career in Microbiology and Immunology research and teaching would be like.
This paper is ideal for students who intend to move into postgraduate degrees in Microbiology and Immunology, as it will prepare you for the tutorial-based fourth-year course work. The paper is divided into four modules, each covering a different microbiology and immunology research.

- Paper Structure
Twenty-four tutorials of one-hour each; lab rotation - 3x ten-hours.
Assessment:- MICR 360 is 100% internally assessed. Each module includes an assessment worth 15%. Assessment types vary but may include an oral exam and oral presentation, a press release or a debate.
- There is a research skills assessment worth 20% - a research proposal for the HRC Rangahau Hauora Investment Stream in the second semester.
- You will be assessed on your experiences in the research labs (3x rotations, 20% total) - the form of assessment will vary, but may include a lab presentation and/or short research proposal or critical review relevant to the reserch in the lab.
- Tutorials outlining requirements and providing support for all of the assessments are included in the tutorial timetable.
- Teaching Arrangements
Tutorials are managed in four modules, two per semester. Each module is 4-5 weeks, including assessment.
The practical component to MICR 360 involves rotations through three different research labs in the department.- Textbooks
