The area of Asia Minor, the Balkans, and the Caucasus is the crossroads of Europe and Asia, with the Turkish republic as its core. Modern Turkey is the principal successor state of the Ottoman and Byzantine empires. The paper considers the politics and society of contemporary Turkey. It explores complexities and tensions at the meeting point of the West, Islam, and the Middle East. It reviews Turkey's interactions with both its turbulent neighbourhood and the wider world.
