    Overview

    Surveys different popular manifestations in the life of the Spanish American countries after independence. Amid an ongoing debate about what constitutes popular culture vis-à-vis high or elitist culture, examples of film, music, alternative (non-European) cultural practices, and popular literature will be discussed and analysed. (For students with knowledge of Spanish; texts will be in Spanish.)

    What do you know about Latin American cinema, gastronomy, myths and legends, dance and music? Are you interested in knowing more about these topics? This paper surveys different popular manifestations in the life of the Latin American countries after independence.

    This paper aims to introduce students to the analysis and interpretation of popular culture seen through film, television, gastronomy, dance, oral tradition, music and literature.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who successfully complete the paper will be able to:

    • Participate in discussions about Latin American cultural development and cultural icons
    • Develop an appreciation and understanding of Latin America social practices and cultural products
    • Construct a detailed and critical argument on an aspect of popular culture, supporting this with evidence and opinions from a range of primary and secondary sources
    • Write a 2,000-word essay in Spanish on a topic chosen by the lecturer
