Construction management will be part of a graduate surveyor's future career. SURV 460 Construction Management continues students' education into project management, but with an emphasis on the aspects of construction management.

- SURV 460 is an elective paper that is suitable for all graduates, but particularly those that are looking at undertaking engineering projects or project management.

- Paper Structure
The material covered in SURV 460 consists of three overriding themes:
- Construction contracts and how they are made: the whole process from feasibility to completion
- The roles of all associated with the contract: the principle, the contractor, the engineer
- The administration of the contract
- Teaching Arrangements
The course material is presented across a full semester.
Lectures introduce the content themes, point out the focus of learning and explain and highlight the key issues that need to be understood.
A knowledge of NZS 3910:2013 is expected, and students will read the entire standard to help with their understanding.
Tutorials are designed to occur at the completion of parts of the paper to reinforce the key issues that students have been introduced to. Tutorials also offer an active learning forum in which discussions are encouraged and student interaction is required.
Practical sessions have been designed to help with the completion of assignments.
Additional handouts of materials, which have been identified to help reinforce the lecture material, will be provided from time to time. The handouts will be from a range of sources, with emphasis on recent real-world examples.
Blackboard: All lecture notes will be made available on Blackboard. Also, Blackboard will be used as the main source of communication with the class.
Assessment: 100% internal (3 assignments and 2 tests)

By the completion of this paper, students should:
- Expand their knowledge and understanding of project management, with particular emphasis on construction management

- NZS 3910:2013 - Conditions of Contract for Building and Civil Engineering Constructions. Particular emphasis is given to understanding the specific and generic clauses contained within NZS 3910:2013, including the role of the engineer to a contract
- The Construction Contracts Act 2002
- The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
