Overview

Turbidites are widespread sedimentary deposits of economic and scientific importance. They dominate Mesozoic sedimentary rocks of the Eastern Province and younger Cenozoic basins. This project will address a basic question: where does the sand and mud in a turbidite come from? Early results indicate very different sources. The work will involve field documentation of samples, petrography, XRD and Nd isotope analysis of mudrocks, and U-Pb dating of detrital zircons in sandstones by LA-ICP-MS.

Recommended preparation: GEOL262/362, GEOL263/363 and GEOL273/373 or equivalent.
