Overview
Endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are both very common disorders affecting women of reproductive age. They are a huge burden to the healthcare system, as well as significantly impacting on the quality of life of affected individuals and their whānau. Endometriosis and PCOS commonly co-occur and there are tantalising data that a complex synergy exists between the two diseases. However, no studies have examined the potential mechanisms by which each disease may impact on the other. Potential MSc or PHD projects could involve established and well-characterised mouse models of both endometriosis and PCOS to determine whether the presence of PCOS impacts on the susceptibility and severity of endometriosis, as well as clinical-based prospective studies that consider the extent and nature of co-occurrence.
If a project along these lines may be of interest, please email Jane Girling.
