Analyst, Growth Solutions
Deloitte

As an Analyst for Deloitte in Auckland Debbie Corson prepares annual financial accounts for a range of small and medium sized businesses and trusts, including management accounts for a large charitable Auckland organisation.

Debbie graduated in 2002 with a BCom with Honours in Accounting. Having lived in Dunedin, she knew about the reputation and quality of education at the University of Otago and the School of Business.

"I chose to study accounting as I enjoyed the subject area, and with Otago at my doorstep I knew it would be a great experience, both academically and socially. Employers tend to acknowledge that Otago graduates are well-rounded people and not just academically successful."

Debbie says the flexibility within the degree structure meant she could move within areas of accountancy that were of interest to her.

"The Accounting department's emphasis on public speaking and personal research skills really stretched me and enabled me to grow in these areas. The learning environment was a great place to develop my skills and confidence."

By entering the Honours programme, Debbie was able to enhance her degree and it has paid dividends with employers.

"The greatest aspect of my studies at Otago was taking part in the Honours programme. I was able to add something extra to my degree and the opportunity to research an area of special interest was really important. When I entered the workforce I felt well-prepared. An Honours degree helped me get my foot in the door and provided something to differentiate myself during the selection process."
