Originally from Christchurch, Sam Trethewey decided to study at Otago after hearing good things about the Otago Department of Finance and even better things about the Otago lifestyle.

Like many first year students, Sam had a general interest in business but was not sure which area he wanted to specialise in.

“Otago allowed me to take a very broad range of papers, so I had an option of three or four different majors going into my second year. I chose Finance as it interested me the most, and it has some impressive career opportunities.”

The lifestyle at Otago lived up to all expectations, but he certainly earned it. Hard work in class allowed plenty of time for surfing, skiing and other outdoor pursuits. His days in a student flat are fond memories, “it's great that everyone is in the same situation as you. The lifestyle is one of the best things about studying at Otago.”

With an eye for 'getting a foot in the right door', in his third year he applied for a summer internship role at Goldmans Sachs JBWere, and was successful. The internship involved a 10-week rotation where he got a taste for most areas of the firm.

His internship proved an invaluable experience, and was a major factor in him gaining his current position as Analyst at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Auckland.

Sam's policy of keeping his options open continues today, and with an internationally recognised degree and employment with a diverse, global company, his options are not only open, but truly international in scale.
