Emma Fairs
Osteopath, Christchurch
MHealSc endorsed in Musculoskeletal Management

Emma has been in clinical practice as an Osteopath for many years. In 2011 she completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences endorsed in Musculoskeletal Management through University of Otago which in her own words she “found both very interesting and clinically useful”.

In 2010 Emma was appointed to the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand (OCNZ) by the then Minister of Health and was Chair of the OCNZ from 2011 through to 2015. She found through her time with the OCNZ she become increasingly interested in “what makes and keeps Osteopath clinicians competent”.

Emma found that whilst there is an increasing volume of literature about this part of practice life from other professions, there was a complete lack of data from the NZ osteopathic profession. Emma wanted to begin the process of investigating this in order that both the profession and the regulator had a clearer understanding of the osteopathic professions' thoughts and beliefs regarding Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Emma has gone on to undertake a Master's by thesis to answer the questions she had about this area of practice.

“I have found the support provided by the University to be excellent and the quality of supervision is exceptional. The time demands for the study have been very achievable, in amongst clinical and family demands, and is certainly not onerous. The online access to supervision sessions and library access provides for a flexible study schedule which works very well for me.”
