Arriving this year … Otago’s new Property Services Director Dean Macaulay and part of the campuses his team looks after.
Otago’s new Director of the Property Services Division has multi-national experience in facilities management, strategic procurement and maintenance planning.
Dean Macaulay extensive experience includes managing large teams and diverse property portfolios in high risk environments.
Chief Operating Officer Stephen Willis says that “given the property portfolio of the University of Otago is both vast and complex, I am thrilled to have recruited such a high-calibre individual to the role and to the University. The appointment is a key part of my goal of transforming the built environment and our service”.
Mr Macaulay starts his role at the University of Otago on 3 December, after working in Melbourne as head of facilities and asset management at United Petroleum.

The large Australian-owned company has service stations across that country and expanded in the mid-2000s to include fuel terminals, so it could import tanker loads of fuel and buy petroleum products direct from refineries in Australia
Mr Macaulay says he has a long-held a desire to work in the university sector because it offers a wide range of diverse properties and space needs, while asset performance will provide a unique opportunity.
Professionally, he cannot wait to meet his team and key stakeholders, and get a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities. He is looking forward to working closely with his team and driving service excellence.
Personally, Mr Macaulay and his wife Melissa have been seeking a sea change to provide a better quality of life for their daughters Madeline (seven) and Brigitte (two). They will be living in Dunedin's Company Bay after many years in Melbourne, Dubai and Qatar.
The couple treasure the outdoors, including tramping, skiing, hockey and mountain biking. They also love music and fine food and wine.
Melissa is a Kundalini Yoga instructor and plans to run classes in Dunedin.
Mr Macaulay says he made his career in the facilities and asset management industry because “it provides services that can enrich the lives of the people working, living, learning and playing in those spaces”.

During Mr Macaulay’s career, his diverse senior management roles have included:
- Regional Account Director (Global Occupier Services) in Melbourne for Cushman & Wakefield, a global leader in real estate services. He led a team providing property services to a complex portfolio of 1500 facilities
- Account Director (Client Operations) in Melbourne for Cushman & Wakefield. He led a team providing facilities management and loss prevention services for more than 2000 facilities, including supermarkets, distribution centres and commercial offices
- Manager responsible for Middle East and North Africa regional property services for a venture in Doha, Qatar involving Cushman & Wakefield, Qatar Petroleum and the Qatar Foundation
- Senior Operations Manager for Emaar Malls Group, running an operations team servicing The Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina Mall, Arabian Ranches and Dubai Marina Walk
Mr Macaulay believes the key strengths he will bring to our University are in:
- Integrated facilities management and compliance
- Whole of life asset planning and financial modelling
- System integration
- Community engagement
- Building services engineering
Mr Macaulay has a Bachelor of Business (Property) and Certificates II & IV in Real Estate Operations (Property Services) from RMIT University in Melbourne, and is completing an Master of Business Administration at Monash University.
