The South Service Riser and preparation work in the north lift lobbies adjacent areas within the Arts North Vertical Core (lift lobbies) is complete.

The upgrade of the north service risers will commence on Sunday evening 25th February. The work will include water services shutdown to the north vertical core and enclosures built to contain and restrict access to toilets and adjacent store or kitchenettes on all floors.
Tea making facilities will be available in the 5th floor south lift lobby and the 1st floor common room.
The South Vertical Core toilets will be alternated on each floor between male and female toilets. The signage for the temporary female toilets will be displayed on the 3rd & 5th floors during this week.

Michelle Moss will continue to liaise closely with Margaret Strange and the Project Team, so Humanities staff should direct your queries or feedback to Michelle (or Kath McGilbert in her absence) in the first instance. Other Divisions affected should contact the Property Services Op Hub (ps.operationshub@otago.ac.nz).

Extensive planning to keep the occupants of the building and the contractors (who are working evenings and nights) safe plus limit noise and disruption has been carried out. However, this is a major project that will last several months in a ‘Live building’ so your patience and understanding will be greatly appreciated throughout.

The upgrade of the South Service Riser within the Arts South Vertical Core (lift lobbies) is complete, and we are ready to move to the North Service Riser! With the completion of the work, access to toilets and adjacent store or cleaners’ cupboards will be restored on the 1st to 5th floors of the south lift lobby after a final clean today and check tomorrow.

There will be some preparation work occurring in the north lift lobbies adjacent areas from next week beginning 22nd January that are required prior to the toilets being closed. Please keep the north lobby kitchenette’s and stores empty to ensure this work can be done.

The toilets will remain in operation until services are turned off and the areas enclosed, similar to the enclosures in the south. This is due to commence in late February, with contractors working evenings and nights to keep the occupants of the building safe, plus limit noise and disruption. The South Vertical Core toilets will be alternated between male and female toilets on each floor. The signage for the temporary female toilets will be displayed on the 3rd & 5th floors during next week before the closures in February.

Arts Building Service RIser Upgrade - Update

The asbestos removal in the north service riser is now complete except within the electrical distribution boards which are sealed to allow the riser upgrade work to continue within the enclosed areas.
So, the tenting enclosures will remain in place but these do not have to be sealed until work on the distribution boards occur.

Before the distribution boards and asbestos removal happens, our 3rd party assessment firm Consultex will test for integrity and sign off all the enclosures. Then throughout the asbestos removal process constant air monitoring externally in the lobby and surface samples plus air monitoring within the enclosures will be done.

We are currently looking at dates for the electrical work. As with the south riser, there will be a full building electrical isolation during a weekend.
This will be followed by a floor-by-floor isolation to upgrade the current boards which will be scheduled over a Friday – Sunday.
As with the South Risers we will be trying to carry these out to impact as fewer occupants as possible and rooms affected will be communicated in advance.
