Otago researcher Dr Khoon Lim is the recipient of the ASBTE Emerging Investigator Award for 2021.

The Australasian Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (ASBTE) award is given every second year to a single recipient, and recognises early career researchers who have demonstrated outstanding research contributions in the field. It also acknowledges the recipient's potential for a future distinguished career.

Dr Lim, a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Otago, Christchurch, impressed the awards selection committee with his many achievements in the relatively short amount of time since obtaining his PhD.

“The committee recognised an early career trajectory that has gone from strength-to-strength, an impressive track-record of publications and engagement with international collaborators, his leadership roles, and a number of awards and fellowships which have contributed to his rapid rise to Senior Research Fellow at the University of Otago,” the committee says.

The committee notes the rate of Dr Lim's career progress appears to be accelerating, and that he is well-positioned to achieve highly in his career in the fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering.

Dr Lim says he feels honoured to receive the award and appreciates ABSTE for the recognition.

“I see myself being extremely fortunate to work in this exciting field of biomaterials and tissue engineering. I have witnessed the evolution, the breakthroughs, the successes but also the challenges first hand, and am keen to contribute to further progress of the field. I wish to thank my mentors, collaborators and also funding sources that have supported and allowed me to pursue my research passion.”
