Background and research interests

As a professional biochemical engineer, Dr Cui joined the CReaTE group as a Postdoctoral Fellow after completing his PhD from the University of Adelaide in 2017, and was then promoted to Research Fellow in 2019.

Dr Cui’s expertise lies in the interface of stem cells, biomaterials, and biofabrication with a special interest in cartilage and bone regeneration, as well as cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment. He has experience in polymer synthesis, tissue culture, anticancer drug screening, drug and gene delivery systems, and stem cell therapy. Currently he is leading a number of pre-clinical trials in the tissue engineering space.

Dr Cui has been awarded a number of research grants helping his research in the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine, such as the Explorer Grant from the Health Research Council of New Zealand supporting his research into the use of synthetic stem cells in the treatment of myocardial infarction (also known as heart attack), and a project grant from the New Zealand Equine Trust supporting the conduct of large-animal pre-clinical trials assessing the therapeutic effect of bioassembled constructs in cartilage repair.

Currently he holds a prestigious Health Science Career Development Postdoctoral Fellowship which supports his investigation into a “bottom-up” biofabrication strategy for cartilage regeneration. He is also involved in a number of national and international collaborations (Australia, China, USA, UK). His research projects include:

  • Exosome for cartilage and cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment
  • "Bottom-up" biofabrication strategy for osteochondral regeneration
  • Smart hydrogel to deliver growth factors for cardiac repair
  • Silk hydrogel for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
