Established in 1985, the laboratory has developed new immune technology for Tb disease control in deer farming and improved diagnostic assays for Johne's disease in deer and sheep.

Current research is looking at improved strategies for Tb vaccination of wildlife, Johnes disease vaccination in cattle, sheep and deer and identifying genetic markers for infectious disease resistance in domestic animals.

International collaborations exist with Saudi Arabi and South Africa for Tb control in multiple wildlife species. DRL is a partner in a joint collaborative consortium on Johne's disease with scientists from Australia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Holland, UK and the USA.
