Department of Mathematics and Statistics

We've just completed a suite of short videos about different aspects of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. It's 100 years since the theory was first published; many of the things Einstein himself thought would be too hard to prove have in fact been proven since then. Have a look and learn more: Einstein Explanations

The University of Otago Junior Maths Competition has run every year for over 20 years. It's a long-answer test of logic and problem-solving ability, giving a useful gauge of students' ability and matching that against other students from throughout the country. The competition is held towards the end of the first term each year.

As well as this, the department runs Problem Challenge which is designed for Yr 7 and 8 students. This involves five sets of five problems, sent out to schools in the course of the year. This resource gives teachers valuable extension material for their maths-capable students. The top students are invited to take part in the Final Challenge each year.

The department also offers an online resource for Year 13 Statistics, outlining 7 different research projects and providing full data sets for students to work with. To find out more about this and other resources from Maths and Stats, check out their website, particularly http://www.maths.otago.ac.nz/videos/statistics/
