Study Environmental Science at Otago
The Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Science is a two-year degree that encompasses both coursework and research. Before you begin, you will identify a supervisor in one of related departments: Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Marine Science, Surveying or Zoology. In the first year, you will take coursework from at least two Science departments and begin your research project. In the second year, you will complete your research project and submit a thesis.
The regulations for this degree, including entry requirements, are very similar to other Master of Science degrees at the University of Otago. The only difference is that course work and research for the degree are done in more than one Science department.
Year One
- Complete four 20-point 400-level science papers from environmentally related Departments across the University. These papers should enhance your knowledge of your research project and be selected in consultation with your research supervisor.
- Complete a Master's Thesis Preparation paper (XXXX 495, 40 points) from your home Department, which is normally that of your primary research supervisor.
Year Two
- Complete ENVS 5 (120 points). This paper involves completion of the research project as well as preparation and submission of a thesis on the research topic that was developed in the first year of the course.
You must obtain 120 points in each year.

To apply, you must first gain approval from one the University's staff to supervise your proposed research project. To find a supervisor, contact research staff in your area of interest.
