It was the international quality of staff and facilities at the Department of Food Science combined with the social opportunities for students that brought Sarah to Otago.

“It's great how you are able to study as well as enjoy a good social life down here. Staff in the department are all very friendly and wanting to help you learn, which creates a comfortable environment. I particularly enjoy how the knowledge learned is integrated in a practical way in the lab, and so we are not always just sitting taking notes. This also means that we interact and get to know others within the class.”

Sarah recieved the Heinz Wattie's scholarship providing financial assistance in 2013, her first year away from home and gave her an added incentive to keep her grades high. Sarah particularly appreciated the hands on experience she received during the summer work placement following her second year - “it gave me experience in the field and allowed me to use what I had learnt over the last couple of years in a practical sense.”
