Overview
A greater proportion of the geriatric population are retaining their natural teeth, which inadvertently has led to an increase in the prevalence of root caries due to extended root exposure. Glass ionomer cement is one of the most common materials used for the restoration of root caries. However, existing glass ionomer cements have limitations in these clinical applications. Our proposed study aims to develop a novel bio-inspired glass ionomer cement that could enhance the clinical success of root caries restorations.
The proposed project will be led by Dr May Mei with co-supervisors Dr Mani Ekambaram and Dr Kai Chun Li. Potential PhD candidates with a dental, material science or chemistry background would be preferred. High-quality candidates may be competitive for a University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship.
