Reporting sexual misconduct at the University of Otago

The University of Otago is committed to creating an environment where there is no tolerance for sexual misconduct of any kind.

The University’s Sexual Misconduct Policy describes the kind of conduct which is unacceptable and the processes by which misconduct can be addressed.

Under the policy anyone affected by sexual misconduct is entitled:

  • To be treated with dignity and respect
  • To receive appropriate support and guidance
  • To have the matter addressed under one or more available pathways
  • To say which of those pathways they want to have followed

Available pathways include:

  • Being supported to make a police complaint
  • Having the matter investigated under the University’s Code of Student Conduct or Ethical Behaviour Policy
  • Having the matter investigated under the rules of a Residential College
  • Access to ongoing support and guidance (support is always available whether or not someone chooses to make a complaint).

Te Whare Tāwharau is the University’s sexual violence support and prevention centre. It will provide or arrange support and advocacy for you and guide you through the available processes.

During semester time students are welcome to pop in between 10 and 4, Monday through Friday at 5 Leithbank (Google Maps).

  • You can obtain advice from Te Whare Tāwharau without having to disclose who you are.
  • If you are unsure about what you would like to do, or unclear about available options Te Whare Tāwharau can help you work through what you think is best for you.

  • Staff receiving reports of sexual misconduct are specifically referred to the expectations of clause 4(c) of the Sexual Misconduct Policy

SMART is the University’s Sexual Misconduct Action Response Team. SMART maintains oversight of sexual misconduct processes at the University to ensure that proper process is followed and affected parties are supported.
